Applied Manufacturing Technologies Successfully Installs State-of-the-Art Automated Production and Material Handling Solutions at Meat Processor Wolverine Packing Co.

AMT shares details of newly-completed installation of flexible automated production and material handling lines at two Detroit-area Wolverine Packing Co. facilities, allowing the company to quickly scale production.

Orion, MI – July 28, 2021 – Applied Manufacturing Technologies (AMT), North America’s largest independent automation engineering company supporting manufacturers, robot companies, systems integrators, line builders, and users of robotic automation worldwide, today announced the successful completion of two major projects at Detroit-based Wolverine Packing Co.

Wolverine, a third-generation family-owned meatpacking business, is a leading processor of ground beef patties, fresh lamb and veal products, and portion-cut steaks for domestic and international customers. Experiencing rapid growth in demand for its high-quality protein products, the company contracted with AMT to design, build and install state-of-the-art automated production and material handling lines at two of its five meat processing plants in the Eastern Market of Detroit. The projects were implemented at the company’s South plant and at its new 180,000 square feet Forest Park meat processing and freezing facility.

“AMT has been our partner in automating multiple lines in our Forest Park and South plants,” said Kevin Schenk, Wolverine’s Director of Technical Services. “The upgrades and new lines have allowed us to increase production and maintain flexibility in our system for future expansion.  AMT has been very responsive to our needs and has provided us with excellent support.”

AMT designed and installed upgraded conveyors and material handling equipment in the Wolverine South plant, an existing site running two shifts of production six days per week.  The phased installation was conducted over two weekends.  Its highly choreographed schedule accommodated the plant’s production schedule with no additional downtime.  In the new Forest Park facility, AMT designed and installed a flexible system which performed taping, weighing, and x-ray functions in the production area, and a nine-station automated robotic palletizing system in the pack-out area.

“We are excited to play a key role the expansion of Wolverine’s production in both their new and existing sites,” said Chief Operating Officer Craig Salvalaggio.  “We have been able to design and implement solutions that have had a positive impact on Wolverine’s business.”

Orion, MI – February 4, 2020 – Applied Manufacturing Technologies (AMT), North America’s largest independent automation engineering company supporting manufacturers, robot companies, systems integrators, line builders, and users of robotic automation worldwide, today announced that Vice President of Operations Services Craig Salvalaggio has been promoted to Chief Operating Officer (COO) of AMT.

“Craig is an accomplished leader with a passion for people and for the business of AMT.  As he has risen through the organization, Craig has lived and breathed AMT’s purpose and core values earning the respect and trust of our employees, as well as our customers and partners,” said President and CEO Michael Jacobs.  “Of all the people I know, no one is more capable and better suited for this role than Craig, and I would like to offer him my heartiest congratulations.”

As COO, Salvalaggio will lead overall operations of Applied Manufacturing Technologies services along with sales, engineering, and talent management. His unique combination of technical expertise in automation and robotics combined with his visionary leadership ability led to his promotion.

Joining AMT in 2003, Salvalaggio was originally hired as a robotics software engineer before quickly being promoted through the ranks to project manager, engineering general manager, vice president of engineering, vice president of operations, and most recently chief operating officer.  Salvalaggio holds a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from Lake Superior State University, a Master of Science in operations management, and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Kettering University.

Salvalaggio is actively involved in the Robotics Industries Association (RIA) as a committee member and co-chair of the RIA Certified Integrator Program, as well as sitting on the Board of Directors for both RIA and Association for Advancing Automation (A3). A prolific writer, Salvalaggio has authored 15 technical articles in a variety of industry journals.  He is also an in-demand speaker, presenting at a wide array of industry events, including RIA International Safety Conferences, Automate, SME, ATX West, The Battery Show, and RoboBusiness CRO Summits.
